Tyshawn Sorey, MacArthur Fellow, Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and professor of music at Penn, pays tribute to jazz pioneer Max Roach and his 1968 album, Members, Don’t Git Weary, a recording with context embedded in one of the most pivotal cultural periods of the 20th century. For this Philadelphia premiere, Sorey’s new arrangements wink at the originals, but also capture the current moment in our cyclical history. Sorey, on drums, will be joined by Adam O’Farrill (trumpet), Mark Shim (tenor saxophone), Lex Korten (piano) and Tyrone Allen (bass) for this heartfelt snapshot of Roach’s music.
